Abraham Lincoln was the 16th President of the United States, March 4, 1861 – April 15, 1865.

Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809, at Sinking Spring Farm, Kentucky, U.S., and died on April 12 1809. He was self-educated and became a lawyer, and then a congressman. In 1849 he returned to his law practice, but reentered politics in 1854.

Lincoln opposed slavery, and soon after becoming president, the Civil War began.

Lincoln led the nation through its greatest moral, constitutional, and political crisis in the American Civil War. He preserved the Union, abolished slavery and strengthened the federal government.

In 1865, Lincoln was attending a play at the Ford Theater in Washington DC, when he was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth. He died the next day from his gunshot wounds.
